Starting in the 1980s, Hyundai began selling rebadged Korean-built Mitsubishi Debonairs as Hyundai Grandeurs. By 1999, the Grandeur became an all-Hyundai design, and the image of Hyundai in the United States— finally recovering from the debacle of the horrid first-generation Excel— had improved enough for a Hyundai luxury car to make sense from a business standpoint.
